Roadburn 2022: Ulver, GOLD and Liturgy among the first additions to the lineup

The mighty Roadburn has unveiled the first batch of artists that will be performing on its 2022 edition. After being forced to postpone its editions for two whole years when hit by a pandemic that  put a full stop to cultural life, the eccletic and boundary-challenging festival feels reformed and refreshed, and eager to return to activity. At the forefront of the announcement is the mythical Norwegian collective Ulver, who will be celebrating 25 years of existence with a special set that will also retain its focus on their most recent release, Flowers of Evil. As with every other Roadburn edition before it, 2022 will present a selection of curated performances, this time around chosen by both Milena Eva and Thomas Sciarone, who, as part of their curated event, will perform as the remarkably touching and emotional piece This Shame Should Not Be Mine as GOLD. Their curatiion will also see two performances by Liturgy – one performing their H.A.Q.Q record in full and another bringing to life Origin of the Alimonies, the later being performed as an opera in sync with a film created by Hunter Hunt-Hendrix and accompanied by a chamber orchestra -, as well as MidwifeBackxwash and Divide and Dissolve.

Further into the announcement, we have the re-confirmation of three commisioned projects; James Kent (Perturbator) and Johannes Persson (Cult of Luna) uniting to perform Final LightJo Quail performing The Cartographer, and Vile Creature and Bismuth joining forces to perform A Hymn of Loss and Hope. As was the original plan for the 2020 edition, Full of Hell will remain as the Artists in Residence, performing four distinct sets – Trumpeting Ecstasy in full, Weeping Choir in full, Garden of Burning Apparitions in full and featuring Spiritual Poison, and lastly, a special collaborative set with Nothing. Elsewhere, Alcest will be performing their groundbreaking record Écailles de Lune and Sólstafir will be performing their equally expansive record, Svartir Sandar, while some familiar faces such as Russian CirclesHelms AleeBig Brave and Primitive Man are reconfirmed to perform at the festival once again. Lastly, the underground black metal bands Lamp of Murmuur and Koldovstvo, as well as Blak SaaganDödsritFaceless EntityGreen LungLili RefrainThe Holy Family and Trialogos complete the first announcement of the festival, with more names to come soon.
